Sheehan: Governor Must Step in After Broadview Violence Against Police

Homer Glen, IL…State Representative Patrick Sheehan, an active-duty law-enforcement officer of nearly 20 years and member of the Illinois House, has responded to the violent protests this past Friday in Broadview and is urging the Governor to take action.

“Our officers put everything on the line to maintain order and they were met with violence,” Rep. Sheehan said. “Governor Pritzker must condemn the violence against Illinois law enforcement officers in Broadview now!”

Several officers sustained injuries during the confrontation as violent agitators escalated what began as a demonstration into active assaults. Illinois law enforcement has faced increasing strain in recent years. A statewide survey of Illinois police departments shows that 60% of agencies report being understaffed, and many departments describe recruitment and retention as a crisis-level challenge. Fewer available officers mean slower response times and greater risk when incidents turn violent. ICE officers in particular have faced a sharp rise in assaults, up over 1000%, alongside a troubling trend of personal information being published online with malicious intent.

Friday’s attacks show the urgency for immediate state action to stabilize the problem and support officers across the state. Law-enforcement personnel continue to face rising hostility statewide, and any delay in response leaves both officers and residents at continued risk. Rep. Sheehan is urging the Governor to take immediate action.

Rep. Sheehan proudly serves the people of the 37th District.
