Rep. Sheehan: State Grants Driving Down Auto Theft and Carjackings Across Illinois

Homer Glen, IL…State Representative Patrick Sheehan (R-Homer Glen) is applauding the latest round of state-funded grants aimed at curbing auto thefts and carjackings, citing measurable success and calling for expanded investment to keep communities safe.

“These grants are making a real difference,” said Rep. Sheehan, a current law enforcement officer with nearly two decades of experience. “We’re seeing crime numbers drop thanks to smart investments in technology and multi-agency collaboration.”

At a press conference in Belleville, the Illinois Secretary of State announced more than $11 million in new grants to support law enforcement efforts statewide. The funding provided by insurance companies at $1 per insured passenger vehicle has already helped recover $65 million in stolen vehicles over the past year, delivering a $5.50 return on every dollar spent.

According to the Secretary of State’s Office, carjackings in Chicago have plummeted from a high of 1,852 in 2021 to just 379 reported so far this year. Sheehan credits the decline to targeted tools like drones, license plate readers, and aerial surveillance via state police Cessnas alongside coordinated task forces that span jurisdictions.

“The pandemic saw a spike in these crimes, but now we’re putting the brakes on,” Rep. Sheehan said. “Law enforcement agencies are working together in ways we haven’t seen before, and it’s paying off.”

Sheehan emphasized that the program operates without state tax dollars, recovering vehicles for both private citizens and rental companies. He’s now urging stakeholders, including insurers and rental firms, to contribute more toward sustaining and expanding the initiative.

“It’s only fair that those who benefit help offset the costs,” Rep. Sheehan said. “We need to ensure our officers have the tools and support they need.”

Rep. Sheehan joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers and law enforcement officials in praising the program’s success and reaffirming their commitment to public safety.

“This is government and law enforcement at their best, working together and guided by data and driven by results,” Rep. Sheehan added.

Rep. Sheehan proudly serves the people of the 37th District.
