Chicago’s firefighters deserve better.
It’s been nearly four years since Chicago’s firefighters and paramedics had a contract. Four years without a raise. Four years of working brutal overtime shifts, covering staffing shortages, and relying on outdated equipment, some of it over 20 years old.
In 2023 alone, paramedics logged more than 230,000 hours of overtime. Some are running nearly 40 calls in a single shift. That should set off alarms at City Hall.
But instead of stepping up, Mayor Brandon Johnson has failed to lead:
-He proposed a $300 million property tax hike after promising not to.
-He’s staring down a $1.2 billion budget shortfall with no clear plan.
-He accepted a donation from a city lobbyist, violating ethics rules.
Let’s call this what it is; a betrayal of the people who keep the city safe.
I am PROUD to support our firefighters. That’s why I filed HB1938, cutting unnecessary red tape so firefighters can spend less time on paperwork and more time protecting our communities. I’m also the sponsor of HB1634, which would create an income tax credit for first responders, putting money back in the pockets of firefighters, police, and EMS personnel as a real show of respect for their sacrifice. And I co-sponsored HB1098, raising the firefighter entry age from 35 to 40. It’s a common-sense move to help departments recruit experienced candidates and fill critical staffing gaps.
I stand with Chicago’s first responders. They deserve a fair contract, safe working conditions, and real respect!
