Rep. Sheehan Calls for the Repeal of the Safe-T Act After Another Tragic Case

Homer Glen, IL…Another heartbreaking tragedy has once again exposed the failures of Illinois’ Safe-T Act, and State Representative Patrick Sheehan is demanding action.

Two-year-old Trinity Balen-Weiher lost her life in a case of shocking neglect and abuse. Her parents were charged with first-degree murder, yet instead of being held in custody while awaiting trial, they were released under the provisions of the Safe-T Act.

“This is unacceptable,” said Rep. Sheehan. “A child was taken from this world in a horrific way, and the people accused of her murder are walking free. The Safe-T Act has turned our justice system upside down, protecting criminals while failing the most vulnerable among us.”

The Safe-T Act, which eliminated cash bail, has led to a growing number of dangerous individuals being released before trial. In Trinity’s case, investigators discovered deplorable living conditions, drug use, and overwhelming evidence of neglect, but still her parents were allowed to go free.

“Law enforcement is handcuffed and our courts are powerless while criminals walk free,” Rep. Sheehan continued. “We need laws that hold criminals accountable. Instead, here we are, seeing two people charged with murder of a child walk free. It’s outrageous and needs to change.”

Rep. Sheehan is calling for action now before another innocent life is lost.
