Rep. Sheehan Urges Action to Protect Illinois Police Officers Following Fallen Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony (w/Video)

Homer Glen, IL…Today, State Representative Patrick Sheehan (R-Homer Glen), himself a police officer, stood alongside fellow law enforcement officials at the Fallen Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony in Springfield to honor the brave men and women who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Nine more names have now been added to the memorial.

“Our officers put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe, yet bad policies continue to put them at greater risk,” said Rep. Sheehan. “One fallen officer is one too many, and we cannot allow another name to be added because of reckless legislation.”

Rep. Sheehan pointed to the Safe-T Act as a prime example of policy that has undermined public safety and weakened law enforcement’s ability to protect citizens. The law has allowed violent offenders to be released on electronic monitoring, putting officers and communities in danger.

Addressing the General Assembly on the House Floor, Rep. Sheehan said, “We have the power to correct this course, to fix this broken law, to take meaningful action that strengthens our police force, protects our citizens, and ensures that no officer’s name is ever added to that memorial because of policy we have created.”
