E-News Updates!

Thanks for reading this E-News Update. Today is the last day of committee deadline week in Springfield. Sadly, many great bills we’ve worked so hard on are simply being left on the table. While that’s disappointing, my commitment to fight for meaningful change remains unwavering. There is still much to be done this session, and I’m honored to represent you.

Today, I’m going to update you on the Homeschool Act and other important items coming out of the last two weeks. Cheers!

“Homeschool Act” Passes Committee Among Overwhelming Opposition: I’m Standing with Home and Private School Families

I’m standing firm in my commitment to protect the rights of parents to choose the best educational path for their children. HB 2827, the controversial “Homeschool Act,” was heard in committee this week and passed despite overwhelming opposition from families who have chosen home or private schooling. This bill mandates that non-public elementary and secondary schools register annually with the Illinois State Board of Education and requires homeschools to submit a Homeschool Declaration Form or face fines and even imprisonment. It also demands that administrators provide personal information about themselves and their students to state and local authorities.

Parents know what’s best for their children, not bureaucrats in Springfield. This bill is a blatant overreach that seeks to solve a problem that doesn’t exist. We should be empowering families, not burdening them with unnecessary mandates.

The public has made their opposition to this legislation loud and clear. Over 40,000 Illinois residents filed witness slips against HB 2827, and thousands traveled to the State Capitol to share their positive experiences with homeschooling and voice their concerns about government overreach.

Forcing additional mandates on responsible parents is not the answer. I will continue to fight for the rights of families to make their own educational choices.

Police Chiefs Meeting

This week, I had the privilege of meeting with several police chiefs from across Illinois right here in Springfield. As a State Representative and a police officer, I know firsthand the challenges our law enforcement officers face every day to keep our communities safe.

Our officers put their lives on the line to serve and protect, and they deserve leaders who stand with them. I will continue fighting for policies that support law enforcement, uphold public safety, and give our officers the respect they have earned.

Thank you to the chiefs who took the time to visit and share their insights. Your leadership makes a difference, and I will always have your back.

Update on the First Responder Qualified Wellness Expense Credit

Great news! My bill, HB1634, passed through the income tax sub-committee last week.

This bill introduces the First Responder Qualified Wellness Expense Credit, providing tax relief to those who serve and protect our communities. If enacted, first responders will be eligible for a tax credit of up to $250 annually to help cover the cost of health and wellness programs. I filed this bill because I want the heroes who support us every day to have access to resources like gym memberships, yoga classes, and self-defense training, promoting their overall physical and mental health.

We’re especially grateful for the bipartisan support that helped move this bill forward. It’s a testament to what we can achieve when we work together for the good of our communities. Stay tuned!
