Last week, my team and I had the privilege of visiting the Lincolnway Special Recreation Center in New Lenox, the first-ever recreation center in the United States built from the ground up with full ADA compliance. Alongside Executive Director Keith Wallace and Superintendent of Recreation, Melissa Jensen, we were able to tour LWSRC’s incredible facilities and learn about the hundreds of programs they provide to more than 200 individuals with disabilities.
Whether it be the wheelchair-accessible picnic tables or the braille and non-verbal communication tools at the park, it was clear during our visit that every detail that went into the creation of LWSRC was carefully planned to accommodate the needs of every individual. Facilities that include an accessible kitchen and sensory room and programs like wheelchair basketball and softball leagues are just a few examples of how LWSRC continues to serve as a pioneer in accessible learning and recreation.
LWSRC’s commitment to accommodation is exemplified best by something Keith Wallace offered during our tour. Keith shared that, when responding to requests regarding accommodations participants need, their answer is often “It’s not a no – we just have to figure out how to do it.” Like the individuals they serve, LWSRC takes up an “anything is possible” attitude when working towards goals others may deem unachievable.
We had a wonderful time touring the facility and cannot thank the LWSRC team enough for their work in ensuring that everybody has a place where they feel welcome. A special thank you to Keith, Melissa, Tom, and Carissa for welcoming us and sharing about all that you do!
