World Alzheimer’s Day

September 21st is World Alzheimer’s Day, a time to reflect upon the impact that Alzheimer’s Disease has on millions of Americans and their loved ones. Like many of you, my family has experienced the worries that stem from a dementia-related diagnosis and has seen the toll it takes on those we care about.

Despite these hardships, there is hope to be had for those who battle Alzheimer’s Disease. As modern medicine continues to advance, new drugs that can slow the progression of early-detected Alzheimer’s have come to market, meaning those with Alzheimer’s have more options for care than just late-stage treatment. While these are remarkable innovations, they require a commitment to early detection and immediate treatment, which is why I am proud to have been a Chief Co-Sponsor of Senate Bill 3318.

Starting January 1st, the State Employees Group Insurance Program will be required to cover all FDA-approved treatments prescribed to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s or related dementia as well as diagnostic testing. This law is the first step in ensuring all Illinoisans have a fighting chance against Alzheimer’s as early as possible. I applaud my colleagues on both sides of the aisle for their hard work on this legislation and for leading the charge to end Alzheimer’s.

This World Alzheimer’s Day, I encourage you to share your stories, advocate for early detection, and support those you know who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Together, we can fight for a healthier Illinois.
